What is Google Penguin Update?

If you are a blogger or a site owner you might probably have heard about Google Penguin Update; the latest webspam killer update Google launched this week in an continual attempt to penalize low-quality spam sites andreward high quality content. Like their earlier Panda update, nobody can tell for sure what exactly Google is experimenting with this algorithm update but Google made it very clear that it’s about targeting sites and blogs violating its quality guidelines.

Here’s an exact quote from the announcement.

In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. Our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sitesthat create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.

How to Survive and Recover From Google Penguin Update Traffic Drop?

Even though the Google Penguin update, just like its big brother Panda update,  was supposedly targeted at sites, which engaged in spammy SEO tactics it appears to have penalized a wide range of legitimate and high quality web sites. If your site or blog has been hit by this update here are some tips directly from Google and some from our own SEO experience that can help you minimize the casualty.

1. Say NO to Hidden Text or Hidden Links

As obvious as it may be as to why this is a bad SEO practice still people keep doing it to trick Google and other Search Engines. Hiding text and links from normal human users and showing them to search engine spiders has been a age old spammer’s technique to boost their search engine ranking.

Site owners resorting to this method of spamming often use CSS to reduce the font size, use white text over white background (to make the texts and links appear invisible to human readers but visible to search spiders), display texts and links behind images, set font size to 0 etc. If you are doing it, STOP right now. Otherwise Penguin will get you!

2. Do NOT Use Cloaking or Shady Redirects

Cloaking is a real illegal blackhat SEO technique. Cloaking is when Search engine crawlers see one page (that is highly optimized for a certain keyword) and the visitor sees another version of the same page. They know whether it’s a crawler or a visitor based on their IP address and/or user-agent.

Similarly shady redirect techniques using meta refresh, Javascript, PHP, ASP and other techniques to mislead the robots and the human eye is a bad practice and is  against Google’s guidelines. If you still use redirects for unethical SEO purposes then you risk to get penalized or banned from the index.

3. Control Your OBLs (Out Bound Links)

Having many outgoing links does not get you any benefits in terms of ranking and could even make your situation worse. If you must have so many OBLs on a page then consider using NOFOLLOW on links that are of low-value. In this way, a visitor can reach this page using a link (pointing to this page) on your site. But the search spiders will not follow the links to all these external sites.

Also, your out-bound links should not appear as if you have sold them. Google is strictly against buying or selling of links with an intent to gain SEO value. So make sure you do not have any sponsored links  available on your blog/site. If you must have them, then make sure you have NOFOLLOWed such links.

4. Do NOT Stuff Keywords

Keyword Stuffing is one more black-hat SEO practice done by some webmasters who stuff their pages with lot of keywords. They use a large amount of keywords inside the post usually in form of synonyms, long tail keyword phrases that essentially mean the same and targeted at a specific set of keywords. Search engines like Google can easily identify it and will penalize your ranking.

A good way to ensure that you are NOT accidentally stuffing your articles with lot of keywords is to keep an eye on the Keyword Density. In simple words. keyword density is the ratio of keywords to the total number of words in a particular article. Usually, a keyword density of about 3% to 4% is considered optimal and you should refrain from going higher than that.

5. Don’t Send Automated Queries to Google

Unfortunately, Google wouldn’t say much about this practice. But as a rule of thumb, refrain your site (blog) from automatically sending any sort of queries to Google servers (or data centers). They clearly state that they do NOT want to be queried unless you have their explicit permission to do so.

In other words, do not use any third party software programs that might send queries to Google in an attempt to submit pages, check rankings, analyze, etc. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

6. Don’t Create Duplicate Pages, Sub-domains, Domains etc

Lots of sites have duplicate content problems. Depending on the nature of the duplicate content the search engine might even ban your site. This can especially happen if the Penguin Update causes them to believe that you are deliberately trying to rank multiple times for the same search terms.

To avoid such issues you can use 301 redirects to tell Google which page you’d want them to index and which to ignore. Also setting the canonical URL can help avoid duplicate content issue.

7. Don’t Create Pages With Malicious Behavior (Badware)

If your site has pages that can cause malicious actions like Phishing or takes part in spreading malwares, tojans, viruses etc then you are going down for good. Anything that might cause harm to your site’s visitors will harm your site’s SEO rank as well.

If your blog was hacked recently then consult a security firm and get your site verified to ensure it has not been left with secret badwares sitting inside that can cause it to get penalized.

8. Do NOT Use Doorway Pages

Doorway pages are web pages that are created for spamdexing, this is, for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending visitors to a different page. Doorway pages are easy to identify in that they have been designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings.

Search engines like Google hate such pages that use fast meta refresh, to curb abuses of doorway pages. If you have any doorway pages, get rid of them if you want to survive this algorithm update.

9. Do NOT Join Affiliate Programs Unless You Add Value

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.

If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

10. Avoid Link Spamming and Bad Neighborhoods

Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links. Also, black hat search engine optimization for your site is against Google’s Policy. Stick to ethical SEO practices and you should survive Penguin update.

Although not official at the moment, news has it that India is the latest to have joined the ‘BitTorrent sites ban’ bandwagon, resulting in the ban of sites, like The Pirate Bay, KickAssTorrents, BitSnoop and other large BitTorrent websites and popular video-sharing website, Vimeo. Users of the Internet services provided by ISPs, like Reliance Communications and Zylog Wi5, reportedly have lost access to these websites, and those trying to access these websites now will be met by an announcement by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which states that the website has been blocked “as per instructions from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).”

The latest ban, affecting the blackout of the aforementioned websites, thereby snapping access, comes as a continuation to what has been a long battle against such BitTorrent websites (remember MegaUpload?) Reports have it that the ban seems to be a government-directed one, and subscribers to all major Internet service providers in the country seem to be among those affected.  

Blocked in India

Internet Piracy has been giving creatives sleepless nights and the run against MegaUpload, which began in the UK has only gained momentum with India joining in. Although, there has been no confirmation on whether the ban is government-directed, the fact that the error message is the same as what appeared when MegaUpload was blocked gives it away. Only recently, we had reported about Reliance Entertainment obtaining a court order, ahead of the release of their movie, Singham. After speaking with a representative from Reliance Entertainment who are the official producers and distributors for the film, a previous report had found that the court order was issued to get Indian ISPs to ensure that the company's movie Singham, which was scheduled to be released then be blocked from unlawful or rather pirated release on filesharing websites. 

While the ban on The Pirate Bay, and other BitTorrent websites doesn’t come as much of a surprise, Vimeo featuring on this list has surprised many. Vimeo, as most of us would know is a popular video-sharing website, and not a BitTorrent website, like the others featured on this list, and is legal, for most parts. Vimeo is largely used by independent filmmakers to share their work. Now it isn’t clear, as to why Vimeo has featured on this list, considering that it is similar to YouTube and is a video-sharing website. 

Some of us however, are still able to access the sites that have been claimed to be blocked by the ISPs, therefore, there still is a certain level of ambiguity as to subscribers to which ISPs have been affected by the blockage.
